Thomas Zika shows Butterflies

butterflies05

From 4 September the internationally active photographer Thomas Zika will be showing works entitled “Butterflies – Dem Admiral das Leben gerettet”. in our gallery. In contrast to the sober, objective depiction of butterflies in “Papillons” last exhibition, Zika now finds an opulent and very poetic pictorial language for the depiction of butterflies. In large-format and color-intensive prints, the viewer is confronted with an exuberant nature that literally swells out of the picture, thus counteracting the technical gesture of the medium of photography.

Von Mäuseträumen und Reisen ins Schneeland

emmerich1

Film art from Essen

bild-821

Although he has given cinema successes such as “das Parfum” or “Krabat” a face, his name is usually only found in small print in the credits. Rainer Stock works for nationally and internationally renowned directors such as Roman Polanski, Tom Tykwer and Bully Herbig. As a storyboard draughtsman he designed the scene sequences and camera angles for the “Baader Meinhof complex” and “ghostwriter”. Rainer Stock lives and works as a freelance illustrator in Essen. From 24 July, the exhibition “Gezeichnet, gepixelt, gedruckt” will offer the rare opportunity to view his works detached from the cinematic context and to admire not only their artistic quality but also the imaginative power of their author.

Echt Ruhrpott!

Although their handwriting could not be more different, the Essen artists Jamiri, alias Jan-Michael Richter, and Helge Jepsen share not only a passion for drawing but also a love of the Ruhr region. A selection of her works can be seen from 24 July at GAM in the exhibition “Gezeichnet, gepixelt, gedruckt”.
Jamiri-Drive-In

Jamiri is one of the most popular cartoonists in Germany. In his picture stories he ironically reflects on the small pitfalls of everyday life or the relationship to his wife Beate. From time to time the Lord himself takes a seat in his car to philosophize with him about life.
jepsen
Helge Jepsen, who was born in Flensburg, also prefers the Ruhr flair to the hip media metropolises of Germany. The successful communication designer works for big magazines like Stern, Playboy or Wirtschaftswoche. Jepsen’s speciality is playing with fictitious worlds of goods whose aesthetics are reminiscent of American advertising posters from the 1950s.

A touch of Hollywood. . .

print_5_mail

The works of Katrin Assmann and Christian Schellewald, who recently arrived at GAM, have come a long way. . The Essen-born live today in California, near Hollywood. Both attended Prof. Otto Näscher’s drawing class at the Essen Folkwang School.

The trained illustrator Christian Schellewald is Art Director of the animation studio Dreamworks in Los Angeles. He has contributed to cartoon successes such as “Kung Fu Panda”; (2008), “Shrek 2”; (2004) or “The Prince of Egypt”; (1998). Schellewald will be represented in the exhibition “Gezeichnet, gepixelt, gedruckt”; with works from his “Sketchbook from California”; (Design Studio Press, 2006), which captures impressions of Californian life in atmospheric drawings. His wife Katrin Assmann, who worked for the German edition of the "Financial Times”; for many years, also deals with her adopted country in her pictures. Often the artist couple also work together: Schellewald’s drawing contours are given space and atmosphere by the colouring of his wife.

Martin Baltscheit at GAM

baltscheitwww

As part of the exhibition “Gezeichnet, gepixelt, gedruckt”, GAM will be showing works by the award-winning artist Martin Baltscheit from 24 July 2010. With his illustrations for the new translation of Rudyard Kipling’s “Jungle Books”, Baltscheit has succeeded in creating a true masterpiece. The review of ZEIT particularly emphasized the “sensually wild” quality of his pictures, which, as a long overdue replacement of the sweet Disney animated film, put the literary classic in the right light again. The presentation of the original preparatory drawings provides interesting insights into the practice of illustration art.
