David Lynch. Transient.
David Lynch became popular with movies such as “Blue Velvet“, “Wild at heart“ or the series “Twin Peaks“. What many don’t know about him: he began his career as a fine artist so that many movies contain processes derived from his education. Lynch (*1946, in Missoula, Montana) went to Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia from 1966-1970 and studied painting, sculpture and photography there. His first solo exhibition in Germany took place in 2009 at the Max-Ernst-Museum.

Hanakam & Schuller: CATALOGUE, part 3
CATALOGUE 7/9/2012 -22/9/2012 shows KOKOMO, series of scanned objects, arranged together in an island-like setting. KOKOMO entitled a 1988 song by the Beach Boys, in which they describe Kokomo as an utopian island paradise located in the Bahamas. The artists play with this narrative structure of an imaginary geographic spot and turn it into -on a first sight abstract – images, that showcase various details of the scanning process of original three-dimensional objects at a closer look.

Opening Reception Wundertüte 2011
Yesterday this year’s edition of “Wundertüte – Die Kunst in Tüten” started with large audience. Martina Eßer of WDR-TV opened up the exhibition with a charming moderation, describing the experiences round the “Wundertüte” from her very personal point of view. On the part of the participating artists Mulheim painter and sculptorer talked about his personal “wundertüte” history, so the gallerist’s task was only to uncover the “Wundertüten”-table, to open the exhibition officially. Turbulent scenes happened, here some impressions:

Slava Seidel and Christian Boltanski from Sep. 9
Slava Seidel, born 1974 in Krivoj Rog, Ukraine, is living and working in Frankfurt/ Main.
2009 Master Student of Christa Näher, Städelschule
2002-08 Hochschule der Bildenden Künste, Städelschule Frankfurt/ Main
1996 Work as a scene designer
1991-95 Studies in interior architecture, Rerich College, St. Petersburg
Slava Seidels paintings are surrealistic phantasies, which recall the “Groteschi” of Tintoretto, Goya and above all G.B. Piranesi. Her “impossible” architectures are the stage for manifold dream characters, who are beyond straightforward readability. The enigmatic scenarios develop a subtle symbolic power, which touch us to the quick – beyond all postsurrealistic banality. In her very personal style Seidel puts her “Dream Territory” with sepia onto the canvas, with an impressing skill and literally “somnambulistic” precision.
Christian Boltanski, known for his sculpture, photography, painting and film making, is a self-taught artist who began painting in his teenage years. In the 1970s his main concern was the medium of photography, he used the camera to record and convey his expression of early action, reaction and consciousness. With these pictorial presentations and accompanying texts he created the Reconstitution Series. During these formative years he was fascinated by the autobiographical, preserving in time his childhood endeavours. By re-living them as an adult they become more obscure and seem ridiculous when performed by an adult. Each pastiche is meticulously placed in time, noted and described as though the exercise is part of a scientific study. The reason for fixating on these particular experiences is not clear as the actions are seemingly mundane and average. It is almost as though he literally practices recording, indicating his said fascination with forensic science and preparing us for further works which serve as faux documents and refer to his own personal history or that of others. In her third solo exhibition at GAM Vienna and Amsterdam based media- and performance artist Julia Willms shows new works, including three audiovisual space installations, digital collages and drawings. Some rare works by Magnum co-founder Henri Cartier-Bresson, including many Vintages, can currently be seen in our gallery in the Collector’s Lounge. The works range from 1933 to the late 60s, and offer a good overview of the work of this outstanding representative of the “pure teaching” of photography..

Thomas Zika shows Butterflies
From 4 September the internationally active photographer Thomas Zika will be showing works entitled “Butterflies – Dem Admiral das Leben gerettet”. in our gallery. In contrast to the sober, objective depiction of butterflies in “Papillons” last exhibition, Zika now finds an opulent and very poetic pictorial language for the depiction of butterflies. In large-format and color-intensive prints, the viewer is confronted with an exuberant nature that literally swells out of the picture, thus counteracting the technical gesture of the medium of photography.
