durch – Jáchym Fleig / Armin Hartenstein

The Trier sculptor Jáchym Fleig and the Berlin painter and draftsman Armin Hartenstein have already entered into a dialogue in several group exhibitions. Under the title “through” they are now showing a double exhibition in the gallery for the first time.
Fleig (*1970) and Hartenstein (*1968) were both born in tranquil Villingen-Schwenningen in the Black Forest. The affinity for rugged nature and landscape can be felt in the work of both artists. Jáchym Fleig deliberately contrasts the spatial architecture with his stalactite-like conglomerates of polyurethane foam, plaster and corrugated cardboard. Outgrowths characterize his works and something organic seems to be growing out of the artificial material.
Armin Hartenstein saws thin plywood to size and shape, applies his work with acrylic, wax, oil paint and other materials. In doing so, he depicts mountains, craters and geological structures in a painterly and object-like manner, playing with illusion and reality. There are no depictions of real landscapes in these pictures, but they are invented and fictional abstractions of reality.

Duration of the exhibition: September 17 – October 22, 2022

SAAI – Super Artistic AI

SAAI FACTORY IS A COLLABORATIVE PLATFORM FOR ARTISTIC PRODUCTION AND AI TECHNOLOGY

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already being used in many technical systems today: for example robotics, blockchain or stock exchange trading. AI generally refers to any human-like behavior performed by a machine or system. But how is AI used in art? And what are the implications of incorporating AI into art? The international artist cooperative SAAI Factory addresses these questions in our exhibition.

Christian Boltanski. Editions.

Our exhibition is a tribute to the great French artist Christian Boltanski, who passed away last July. We show selected editions in which various aspects of his work come to light.

The art of Christian Boltanski, who was born in Paris in 1944, is shaped by memories of the Holocaust and the reconstruction of his own past. In the cramped, half-dark spaces that he created in his installations, with the props that anonymously referred to people and their fates, the musty mountains of clothing, the stacked zinc crates and the patinated black-and-white photographs, he created an oppressive atmosphere of personal concern that was difficult to bear is. These installations have become icons of the art of memory.

He also acted subversively, because in one of his most important works, the 1200-photo installation Menschlich from 1994, he mixed portraits of the deceased victims with pictures of German soldiers and SS people, of perpetrators. As part of his exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg in 2013, Boltanski said: “I no longer know who is the perpetrator and who is the victim. It just so happens that a man can love his child and kill another child at the same time. Everyone has what it takes to turn into a devil from time to time. But even the devil sometimes takes a break.” – A commentary on the horrors of war, which has unfortunately become very topical again. Boltanski had Ukrainian roots himself, and we will miss his artistic statement in these times. The exhibition features signed photogravures and lithographs that were edited in a small edition.

Thomas Zika – Sovereign Fruits

Statement by Thomas Zika:
“…Before taking any photographs I am pretreating my analog 4×5 inch film material with mushrooms, which pollute out their spores latently on the film sheets, creating beautiful, but chaotic lamella circles. Depending on humidity and ripeness I let this hidden process endure from hours to months. Serendipity is my friend and my enemy: the emergences of the artefacts on the film sheets are accidentally and unpredictable. The fungi segregate their spores upon the surface lying underneath originating extremely delicate lamellar aureoles appearing as a mix of explosion and aura.
Additionally I am mounting roots from dehydrated plants inside the bellows of my large format camera, which create black fotogram-like outlines to echo a „menetekel“ from the future.
I am applying this trans-dimensional experimental method within my project „sovereign fruits“. I am going to photograph in a biotope near my hometown: a creek running through a forest valley, swampland, birds. Viewed superficially everything seems OK, but over the last years the habitat has changed enormously according to the impacts of global warming.
As I am no longer able to believe in any truth embodied in journalistic documentary picture language, my artistic work results in these chaotic, but beautiful photographs, which whisper of a different thruth of their own…”

THOMAS ZIKA – Sovereign Fruits
Opening Friday, 11 February, 2022, 7 p.m.
Duration: 12 February – 19 March, 2022

(Kathrin Reeckmann)

Dirk Salz – Every Colour You Are

In the second half of 2021, under the title PRÄSENZ, the gallery will show three artists from the gallery who have been closely associated with the gallery for a long time: Jürgen Jansen, Dirk Salz and Jürgen Paas. The focus of the series is on non-digitizable works, art that can only be adequately experienced in the presence of the art object and the physical presence of the viewer. In the second part of the series we show Dirk Salz, who works with many pigmented layers of epoxy resin in his pictures. “From the materiality of his different materials with pigments, resins, aluminum or wood, he develops picture objects, layer by layer, whose inner infinity, color and light intensify in a dialogue with the viewer.” (Dr. Gabriele Uelsberg)

Jürgen Jansen – Any Colour But Red.

In the second half of 2021, under the title PRÄSENZ, we will show three gallery artists who have been closely associated with the gallery for a long time: Jansen, Salz and Paas. The focus of the series is on non-digitizable works, art that can only be adequately experienced in the presence of the art object and the physical presence of the viewer. Teh Gallery begins with Jürgen Jansen, who works with many layers and levels in his pictures. Jansen’s works make the offer to go on a research trip into the picture and to reconstruct the process of creation of the work in view of the original. The viewer is immersed in peculiar visual worlds that allow diverse associations from macro to micro, from star formations to plant and cell structures.

NÄHE #3 – verführen

Closeness can quickly become too much, but it is never enough. We want more and more. We seduce and allow ourselves to be seduced to get closer and closer. The closeness should be anytime, anywhere and permanently. The border to the other should be overcome, it should fall, in favor of absolute closeness. Whether in the erotic encounter of lovers, the get-together of parents and child, the intimate closeness of siblings or best friends, we let ourselves be seduced by images of intimate closeness. We seldom realize that this seduction to closeness never hits the immediate feeling, but is always conveyed through the respective medium – unless through art.

NÄHE #2 – spüren

How can you get close to yourself? Searching and longing to feel oneself frequently lead to trying to get under the skin. In the figurative and in the real sense. Tattoos and (self) harm pursue this goal, as do close-up photographs that come close to the surface of the body and show wrinkles, pimples and pores. The painting can turn the inside out through color and the line of the drawing creates a trace on the picture(skin) that let us feel – maybe even ourselves.

CLOSENESS #1 – touch

The desire for closeness goes hand in hand with the need for touch. Touching means overcoming the spatial separation between the self and the other. The distance shrinks to a minimum and a positive feeling of familiarity is beginning. But the touch can also be uncomfortable, scary or overwhelming, dangerous or painful. The abandonment of contact and the desire for distance fulfill important functions for the individual and society – they keep the dark side of closeness under control.

CLOSENESS – exhibition project

The current omnipresent demands for social distance lead to a lack of contact and physical closeness in our everyday life. As a result, works of art come into focus that seem to deal directly with one’s own body and that of the other. The (naked) body and its surface, the skin, are the preferred subject of this work. They understand the body boundary as a barrier but also as a contact zone between inside and outside. You go in search of closeness between friends and strangers, between family members, between couples, but also for closeness to yourself. The exhibited works of art show an awareness that the supposed directness of the body is always mediated. Video, photography and performance as well as drawing and painting, as artistic media, guide the way in which we create and experience closeness and distance. The exhibition series deals with these ambivalences.

Marcela Böhm. Magical Reality.

“My paintings include things, which contradict the motivic logic. This irritation is important for me, because life is like this. You always find disruptions in reality, magical or lyrical moments in everyday life, when you don’t understand anything and nothing fits together. But in the end everything joins to build a wonderful new scenery.”
Marcela Böhm
