“Within my artistic practice, I refine modes of self-perception and juxtapose them with a volatile environment. Consequently, identity templates emerge, akin to self-portraits manifested through diverse techniques, always in close proximity to the corporeal realm. These portraits function as universal composite systems, bridging the emotional inner world, dreams, and reality, navigating the paradoxes inherent in the human-made environment and social interaction.
Over the years, my body of work has evolved from print graphic works on paper and video performances, continually honing its precision and density. Currently, various materials are employed across distinct thematic series. Thin, polished stainless steel sheets are transformed into folded, slender bodies mounted on the wall. Through incisions, manual folding, and deformation, they transform into visors or shields, assuming a mask-like appearance. Their scale, however, transcends human proportions. Perfectly polished to a mirror finish, they visually alter the actual space they inhabit, simultaneously fragmenting external information like all subjects, intricately reflecting it back.
Freestanding sculptures crafted from aluminum, copper, or brass constitute bioamorphic skeletons, standing naked and unencumbered within both interior and exterior spaces. Frequently utilized materials include metals and cowhide, manipulated with focused folds, bends, breaks, burns, and scratches. Exhibiting extraordinary resilience, durability, and endurance.
Integral to my body of work are photographs of parts of human bodies serving as a flexible interface and skin as a communicative organ. The motifs, resembling microscopic landscapes, are directly printed on cattle leather or copper, partially scraped or worn away with solvents.
I perpetually observe and assess my environment and the individuals around me. However, the completed works often veer into a humanoid or anthropomorphic domain. These creations can be perceived as rugged and archaic, yet equally as components of futuristic technology and within the realm of science fiction. My endeavor is then to reintegrate them into my emotional and worldly system.”
Moritz Riesenbeck
“I investigate the real, the memories, the traces, the emotions that we leave behind and through which we construct our realities. Our connections to places, architectures and objects are conditioned by these factors, for which I seek and for which I establish perceptibility. I am searching, connecting and visualising information. All components such as a flat, a told story or a person can become a material.
Moments in which we connect with our physical environment are establishing complex mental and/or physical conglomerations of the past, present and future – a flat becomes the memory of a person, a rescue mattress the memory of a body. I try to make this condition atmospherically tangible.”
Moritz Riesenbeck, born in 1991, first studied architecture in Münster and there worked as a tutor in the History and Theory Department. Simultaniously, he began studying Art in Public Space at the Kunstakademie Münster with Profs. Löbbert and in 2018 switches to the class of Prof. Gregor Schneider at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he graduated with exellence diploma (Meisterschüler) in 2022. Riesenbeck is an editor of artistbooks, founding member of About Repetition e.V., the Sono-Kollektiv, as well as a contributor to the group Impersonal Figure and is currently lecturer at the ABK-Stuttgart for architecture and industrial design.
Emil Walde
The work of Emil Walde is intrinsically related to space, as his works combine sculptural and spatial features, fluctuating between both and yet refusing to find a statical position within any of them. This reluctancy towards an exact definition is what brings the viewer closer to an understanding of the conceptual meaning of Walde’s work. The artistic Materia is space itself, being shaped via intervention, transformation, addition, replacement, restoration and recontextualization. Variation is a fundamental part of it. By means of reusing objects, he removes the “meaning”/”idea” that defines its qualities, to then present it in a new context. Here all previous conceptions of it disappear and are translated into a new narrative. That is one of the defining characters of Emil Walde’s work – the narrative is yet to be determined by the person who is faced with it. His work enhances a reflection on the standard methods of identifying and categorizing what is seen. (Felix Fischer)
Emil Walde, born 1991 in Munich, began his studies 2014 at Kunstkademie Düsseldorf under Prof. Gereon Krebber. In 2015 he switched to Prof. Franka Hörnschemeyer and Gregor Schneider and he became „Meisterschüler“ of Franka Hörnschemeyer in 2021.

SATURDAY, MARCH 2, 2024, 4-7 PM
Location: GLASS PAVILION IN GRUGAPARK ESSEN
Introduction by the curator Dr. Sabine Kampmann
Exhibition duration: March 2nd – April 7th, 2024, can be viewed from the outside all day.
Finissage Sunday, April 7th, 2024, 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
In our exhibition series in vitro we are showing an installation by the Düsseldorf artist Emil Walde in the wonderful glass pavilion in Grugapark. Walde works site-specifically, he deals with the conditions and circumstances of a place and processes them in the work of art created specifically for this place. The work changes the perception of the existing architecture and merges with it. Walde’s artistic interventions open up a completely new perspective on the architecture and spaces that surround us. Walde gets to the bottom of the conditions of architectural spaces. He digs into the depths of their functionality and form, ultimately returning to their surface and showcasing a new kind of beauty.
In addition, we will be showing a group show curated by Emil Walde at Galerie Obrist from March 22nd: March 22nd – May 4th, 2024, opening Friday, March 22nd, 7 p.m.
The Grugapark entrance ticket office at Grugabad is closed, please use the main Grugapark entrance at the Grugahalle (public transport) or the entrance at the Mustergarten (car).

The Düsseldorf artist Dieter Nuhr is showing his fifth solo exhibition at Galerie Obrist. While the photographic aspects of his artistic work were previously the focus, new elements are now being added: Nuhr works with digital brushes, combining them with photographic material, patterns and structures, he paints with data. Layer by layer, images emerge from photographs that seem like paintings, an intention that also emerged in Nuhr’s purely photographic works. In the new pictures, their own disappearance is now recorded, so to speak. Just as the memory of an event or a place gradually slips away from our memory and actually only exists in the snapshot from back then, Nuhr’s pictures also show us how an image that was actually captured and perceived disappears before our eyes and merges indivisible with other picture elements. A text from the Osthaus Museum in Hagen says: “What is photographed is lost, only to be re-constructed in the painting process. Images slip away and re-form themselves.”
This year we are continuing the exhibition series “in vitro. ART IN THE GLASS PAVILION” in Grugapark Essen with two exhibitions:
Location: GLASS PAVILION IN GRUGAPARK ESSEN

“in vitro.” is an exhibition series in which artists of international stature directly engage with the fantastic architecture and location of the glass pavilion in Essen’s Grugapark. Two exhibitions are planned annually until September 2025, with the aim of revitalizing the architectural and protected gem of the 1960s and bringing outstanding art with national appeal into a new context: the art comes out of the studio, the gallery or the museum, to the people in Grugapark.

Jürgen Paas – NEON
20 October – 18 November, 2023
Exhibition from October 21st – November 18, 2023
Opening Friday, October 20th, 7 p.m.
The gallery has been working successfully with the German painter and installation artist Jürgen Paas since 2010, and since then we have been showing his new works in solo exhibitions every two years. Our book “United Colors” was published for Jürgen Paas’s last exhibition, in which his work development over the last few years is presented.
This year the chosen exhibition title is “NEON”, which on the one hand refers to the Latin term for the “new”, and on the other hand to the fluorescent colors that Paas uses in some of his recent works. This gives to the JUKEBOXES an additional dimension and stresses its radiance and sharp contrast. Paas also experiments with the formats and abandons the basic square shape. In the exhibition we are now showing a summary of the works from the last few years.

Till Augustin & Stephan Marienfeld – BOUND
9 September – 14 October, 2023
Exhibition from 09.09. – 12.10.2023
Opening Friday, September 8, 7 p.m.
The Nuremberg sculptor Till Augustin has already been shown many times in our gallery and he is now entering into a dialogue with the Hattingen artist Stephan Marienfeld for the first time as part of a double exhibition. Both demand the impossible from the sculptural material, when Augustin forces heavy steel ropes or brittle blocks of glass into the desired form, and Marienfeld ties stone, porcelain or metal with ropes as if they were soft material. In our exhibition, the lacing and knotting of the two artists enter into a fascinating juxtaposition without obscuring the different artistic approaches.
As part of the exhibition, RAUM:ZEIT 112 will take place on Friday, September 22nd at 7 p.m., with Yoshino on the violin.

From the lecture hall to the gallery
Students from the Essen HBK have realized the exhibition “Where Is My Mind” with the Obrist Gallery, which can be seen in Rüttenscheid from July 15, 2023.
Students at the Essen HBK have heard the expression “unprofitable art” often enough. But what do artists actually do so that they also have something to eat? The students tested this in an unusual seminar.
Insights into the gallery work
Galleries form a central part of today’s art market. This is not surprising, since very few artists are able to market their works in addition to their creative work. Successful artists therefore have valuable partners in their gallerists who complement their area of expertise. Torsten Obrist is such a gallery owner. In cooperation with Prof. Carsten Gliese from the HBK Essen, he welcomed students of the Photography/Media Art (B.F.A.) and Art and Cooperation (M.F.A.) courses for the first time as part of a seminar in his gallery in Essen.
In the “Inside Gallery” course, the students gained an insight into gallery work and planned a joint exhibition. The essential steps for designing a professional presentation of one’s own works were worked out together with the teachers. This should make it easier for the students to enter the art market later.
Exhibition reflects on the body and the corporeal
The exhibition has the title “Where Is My Mind?”, which is more than just a randomly chosen question. In the work of the students, as well as in current art, there is an intensive examination of the (human) body as an artistic medium and as a motif for reflection on the subject and identity. Therefore, a possible answer to the question “Where Is My Mind?” asked in the title could be: “Inside The Body!”
The students cordially invite you to the opening on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at 6 p.m. and look forward to entering into the discourse with you.

We are showing the first exhibition of Sander Reijgers (*1977) in our gallery. The Dutch painter and sculptor has developed a very independent and outstanding work in recent years. Time plays an important role in it: over many months he applies layers of color to his pictures, and only when looking from the side the many colors of the layers become visible. The work process is preserved in these painting objects like in a time capsule which the viewer is now allowed open.
Opening Friday, March 10, 2023, 7 p.m.
Duration of the exhibition: March 11 – April 22, 2023
Opening times: WED-FRI 12-18h, SAT 10-16h
The works of the Düsseldorf artist Jürgen Jansen are abstract, although here and there one would like to recognize objects, such as cell structures, floral forms or underwater worlds. Before studying fine arts, Jürgen Jansen studied biology with Per Kirkeby and Jan Dibbets, so he is also familiar with scientific methods. Science and research into the building blocks of the world have flowed into his artistic work. Accordingly, he describes his pictures as “experimental arrangements”. In his paintings, calculation and heurism are combined in such a mature way that the viewer has the feeling of being confronted with a self-sufficient cosmos of images.
Jansen’s paintings are characterized by a far-reaching reflection on the most diverse suggestions and impulses from the history of painting, in a spectrum from Monet’s Water Lilies to Ernst Wilhelm Nay and Jackson Pollock’s Drippings. Jansen succeeds in continuing to write these very different positions from art history with contemporary means. The result is his individual version of abstract painting, a universal panorama full of affirmations and contradictions.
Fabian Weinecke – Painting / FESTLAND – “Hippies”, Album Release
Opening Friday, January 20, 2023, 7 p.m.
Duration of the exhibition: January 20 – February 11, 2023
Opening times: WED-FRI 12-18h, SAT 10-16h
Gallery Obrist is showing works by Fabian Weinecke and FESTLAND are playing songs from their new album “Hippies”.
The Düsseldorf artist Fabian Weinecke (1968-2012) left an extensive oeuvre that can now be rediscovered in this exhibition. In small-format paintings and drawings, Weinecke unfolds idylls and Arcadian landscapes, which are always broken up by inconsistent elements. He often uses the form of the raw picture carrier in his composition, be it wooden planks or torn paper, or he integrates modern devices such as tape recorders or electric guitars into the motifs of the mythologically seeming idyll. “Weinecke takes us into the enigmatic and quirky. Narratively speaking, his pictures run into the indefinite, they generate no meaning and do not explain any connections. But the absurdity of the situation is clear.” (From the text: “Idyll versus Irony” by Sven Drühl, 2011)
Fabian Weinecke grew up in Düsseldorf, studied fine arts at the Düsseldorf State Art Academy from 1988 to 1990. He first lived in Essen, later in Berlin. Selection of exhibitions: 2010 “Night Works”, Märkisches Museum, Witten / 2008 “Lügen”, Künstlerverein Malkasten, Düsseldorf / 2007 “Phantasmagoria”, Galerie Claudia Simon, Düsseldorf / 2005 “Just Perfect”, Galerie Jacky Strenz, Frankfurt am Main / 2003 “Rage in Eden”, Gallery Jacky Strenz, Berlin
As the lyricist of the Essen pop band FESTLAND, Fabian Weinecke’s world of ideas is still present today, and the band’s new album was the occasion for the extensive exhibition and concert tour that begins at Obrist Gallery.
FESTLAND, Portrait: Cornelis Gollhardt
Byte.FM is presenting the FESTLAND tour and writes:
“Hippies” will be released on January 20, 2023 as a double album on the Hamburg label ZickZack Records. Although the band, which was founded in Essen in 2004, is nominally a trio, it still feels more like a quartet. Because in their minds they see the painter who died in 2012, illustrator and lyricist Fabian Weinecke as an “associated band member”. Because not only did he write most of the band’s lyrics and design their covers before his death, the bond remains after his death and Festland also conceptualizes Weinecke’s work on their fourth album , idealistic and artistically true. This is reflected in the setting of his lyrical texts on “Hippies” and the band continues to use his pictures for cover design. In the mid-nineties, the studied musicians Joachim Schaefer (Yoshino) and Dietmar Feldmann (DDFM) joined with Thomas Geier for Festland. Geier had not learned the percussion at the conservatory, but played from beginning to the middle of the 90s on the most important albums by “Die Regierung”. Geier’s percussion and Feldmann’s double bass groove form the mainstay of the song “Girls on the Kai”. A minimalist-jazzy, stoic support on which vocal harmonies are layered (…). This structure doesn’t even falter when dramatic strings pile up towards the end. Instead, it remains securely anchored in the no man’s land between pop and avant-garde.

Even today, women artists who become mothers have to grapple with the question of how motherhood is presented to the outside world. Because it almost seems to be a flaw: making art and being a mother is unthinkable for many art practitioners. Career pauses and career breaks are literally expected and it is doubted whether art can still be created professionally under the conditions of a baby. As in every profession, it is about the question of the compatibility of work and motherhood and whether the art world is not subject to special peculiarities. In one way or another, each of the participating artists in this exhibition has experienced it.
The exhibition also poses the question of how one’s own child and family influence artistic work. Annegret Soltau was one of the first contemporary artists to reflect on her motherhood and her family in her own work, and that was a scandal in the male-dominated art world of the 1970s. Today, the insult is more subtle, with some female artists simply not talking about their motherhood. And why not: children hardly ever appear in the biographies of male colleagues.
The exhibition is the prelude to a more in-depth examination of the topic, which will be followed by further events and a publication by 2024.
