recommended in
Ch. Mullins – Picturing People. The New State of the Art.
published by Thames & Hudson, London 2015
192 pages, 70 artists, Hardcover
“In this companion to 2006’s Painting People, art critic Charlotte Mullins explores the latest wave of figurative art in the contemporary marketplace, both celebrating individual artists and contemplating why figuration has become popular yet again. […] Figurative art is a broad subject, but Mullins’s astute overview pairs powerfully with the selected images, offering a perceptive argument for the enduring range and power of figuration into the 21st century.”

BlinkyBlinky by Jürgen Paas

The recollection of modern icons occupies contemporary artists everywhere. With his new series BlinkyBlinky Jürgen Paas reflects on the work of legendary Blinky Palermo, who himself is hardly classifiable, and who always had winking references to the history of art in his work.

WAZ on Sign, Pattern, Ornament

WAZ- Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung published a report by Martina Schürmann on our current exhibition: “Die Bilder werden zur Bühne” (“Images become the stage”) | WAZ.de – Read more HERE!

Group Show
28 June – 23 August, 2014
Opening Reception 27 June, 2014, 7 p.m.[/lang_en-us]

Sign – Pattern – Ornament

The stronger the artistic autonomy, the more the ornament turns into an accessory part: In the 21st century this rule does not apply anymore, as trend-setting exhibitions by the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg and the Fondation Beyeler worked out, that ornament currently resurrects as the carrier of a global pictorial language. Geometric, floral and calligraphic ornaments are more than just decoration, instead they visualize classification systems, which now are critically questioned by contemporary artists. In selected works by artists of the gallery our exhibition discusses the current controversy on this topic.
Works by: Wiebke Bartsch, Marcela Böhm, Michael Goller, Simone Haack, Hanakam & Schuller, Armin Hartenstein, Bodo Korsig, Jürgen Paas, Rainer Stock, Martin Schwenk.

Art Karlsruhe 2013

10 years of Art Karlsruhe, and for the 10th time Obrist Gallery will be participating! Over this period the fair has become one of the most important artfairs in the German-speaking world: Congratulations to the administration of the fair!
This year the gallery has moved to hall 2. With its emphasis on current contemporary positions this hall provides us with the best context. We are proud to present work of the following artists:
MARCELA BÖHM (One Artist Show) – After her outstanding solo exhibition at the gallery we show for the first time in Karlsruhe a One Artist Show of the Argentinian Painter.
DIETER KRÄNZLEIN – For years new stone works by Dieter Kränzlein belong to the highlights of our booth and the Art Karlsruhe.
JÜRGEN PAAS – The idea of color archives accompanies Jürgen Paas in his space installations, as well as in his paper and book works. With „Popplanet“ Paas just published a big monography, which we will present at our booth in Karlsruhe.
MARTIN SCHWENK – His solo exhibition at Museum Haus Lange Krefeld 2012 proved impressively, that Schwenk is amongst the most important sculptors in Germany. (Starting June 2013 exhibition of Martin Schwenk at Museum im Prediger, Schwäbisch-Gmünd.)
Moreover at our booth you can have a closer look at the works of Düsseldorf painter ARMIN HARTENSTEIN, at wooden sculptures by Mülheim-based ROBIN HORSCH and at works from the series „Black and Wide“ by Mannheim photographer PETER SCHLÖR.
